Plans for February 14 to February 18

Monday or Tuesday (A/B)

  • Reading Check Quiz: Huck Finn, chapters 6-8
  • Review: Reading Check Quiz answers for Huck Finn chapters 6-8
  • Discuss: Students will share a few of the quotations from their study guides to lead into a discussion of a few key passages for close reading.
  • Read: Chapter 9, pausing for discussion of key passages and plot developments.
  • Quick Write Activity
  • Map Project: Students will become familiar with the project that will accompany the novel.  Students will partner up and begin mapping out Huck’s literal journey in addition to his moral journey on a large poster board.
  • Homework: Read chapters 10, 11, and 12 for homework.  Be prepared for a reading check quiz next class.  You must also fill out your Huck Finn quotation guide for these chapters. 

Wednesday or Thursday (A/B)

  • Reading Check Quiz: Huck Finn, chapters 9-12
  • Review: Reading Check Quiz answers for Huck Finn chapters 9-12
  • Discuss: Students will share a few of the quotations from their study guides to lead into a discussion of a few key passages for close reading.
  • Close Reading Focus: Morality in chapters 9-12
  • Full-Class Reading: Chapter 13 with a focus on “moral codes”
  • Small Groups Discussion Topic
  • Closing Activity: If time permits, students will continue working on their map projects for the last few minutes of class. 
  • Homework: Read chapters 14, 15, and 16 for next class.  Be prepared for a reading check quiz next class.  You must also fill out your Huck Finn quotation guide for these chapters. 

Friday or Wednesday (A/B)

  • Reading Check Quiz: Huck Finn, chapters 13-16
  • Review: Reading Check Quiz answers for Huck Finn chapters 13-16
  • Discuss: Students will share a few of the quotations from their study guides to lead into a discussion of a few key passages for close reading.
  • View and Discuss: PowerPoint presentation on Kemble’s illustrations for the original version of Huck Finn.  Students will also read and discuss passages from the correspondences between Twain and his editor concerning the illustrations. 
  • Analyze: Three examples of illustrations, focusing on portrayals of Jim
  • Quick Write Activity
  • Closing Activity: Students will continue working on their map projects for the last few minutes of class. 
  • Homework: Read chapters 17, 18, 19, and 20 for homework.  Be prepared for a reading check quiz next class.  You must also fill out your Huck Finn quotation guide for these chapters.  Your Quote Guides for chapters 1 through 20 are due next class!
