Monday or Tuesday (A/B):

  • Note-Taking: Local color and regional literature
  • Read, Discuss, and Analyze: “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” by Bret Harte (handout)
Wednesday or Thursday (A/B):

  • Review and Discuss: Local color literary elements, “The Outcasts of Poker Flat"
  • Read: Introduction to Mark Twain (p. 566-567)
  • Note-Taking: Mark Twain and Humor Writing (PowerPoint presentation).
  • Read: Mark Twain’s “How to Tell a Story” (p. 575)
  • Discuss: The background story behind “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain. 
  • Begin Reading: “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” pausing for discussion of local color and humor.
  • Homework: Students will finish story for homework and be prepared for a reading check quiz next class.
Friday or Monday (A/B):

  • Reading Check Quiz: “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” local color, and humor writing
  • View: Clips from Jump: A Frogumentary
  • Discuss:  We will then discuss the film, focusing on how the long-held tradition honors Twain’s legacy and also celebrates the town’s traditions (how “local color” is still valued in our society today.)
